One is cosmetic. One is medical. Telling them apart changes everything.
This is one of the questions we hear most at RK Centre in Yorkville — so here is a clear, honest guide to each, and where LPG endermologie does and does not fit in.
First, the important part. Lipedema is a recognised medical condition. This article is for general education only and is not medical advice. If you think you may have lipedema, please see a qualified doctor for a proper diagnosis.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is the dimpled, "orange-peel" look that appears most often on the thighs, hips and buttocks. It happens when fibrous bands under the skin tighten while fat pushes up against them, creating that uneven texture.
It is extremely common — most women have some, at any weight — and it is completely harmless. Cellulite is a cosmetic concern, not a disease. It lives in the connective tissue just under the skin, which is exactly why creams and dieting so often fall short.
What is lipedema?
Lipedema is different. It is a chronic medical condition in which fat builds up abnormally, usually symmetrically in the legs (and sometimes the arms). It is thought to be linked to hormones and genetics, and it almost only affects women.
Unlike ordinary fat, lipedema fat can feel tender, bruise easily, and often does not respond to diet or exercise the way you would expect. A telltale sign is that it usually spares the feet, which can create a "cuff" or "bracelet" effect at the ankle. Because it is a medical condition, lipedema needs to be diagnosed and managed by a doctor.
The quick comparison
| Cellulite | Lipedema | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A common cosmetic skin texture | A chronic medical condition |
| How it feels | Usually painless | Can feel tender, heavy or achy |
| Where | Thighs, hips, buttocks | Symmetrical in the legs / arms; spares the feet |
| Diet & exercise | May help a little | Often resistant |
| Who to see | An aesthetic professional | A doctor, first |
How to tell which one you have
A few simple signs point toward lipedema rather than plain cellulite:
- It is symmetrical — both legs (or both arms) look the same.
- The area feels tender or heavy, and bruises easily.
- It spares the hands and feet, sometimes with a "cuff" at the ankle.
- It runs in the family and resists diet and exercise.
If several of these sound familiar, the most important step is a medical assessment. Only a qualified doctor can diagnose lipedema.
Where does endermologie fit?
This is where it is important to be precise.
For cellulite, LPG endermologie is FDA-cleared for improving its appearance. The CELLU M6 INFINITY® mechanically stimulates the connective tissue to smooth and firm the skin — non-invasive, no needles, no downtime. Individual results vary.
For lipedema, endermologie is not a cure and not a treatment for the condition. What it can offer is supportive, non-invasive care — gentle mechanical lymphatic stimulation that some people find eases the heavy, swollen feeling — always alongside a doctor's plan, never instead of it.
The honest bottom line. Cellulite is cosmetic; endermologie can help with how it looks. Lipedema is medical; it needs a doctor, and endermologie can only ever play a gentle, supportive role with your physician's clearance.
What to do next
If it is the look of cellulite you would like to improve, you are welcome to apply for a private assessment with Rufina. If the lipedema section rang true, please start with your doctor — we are happy to work supportively alongside their guidance.
